Gammarus pulex (L.) feeding bioassay--effects of parasitism.

چکیده
Taylor et al. (1993) described a pollutant bioassay based upon a change in the rate at which Gammarus pulex (L.) consumes a novel food source (eggs of the brine shrimp Anemia salina) when the animals are stressed by exposure to a pollutant. The bioassay is rapid and non-destructive, and produces results with less variation than reported using conventional leaf-feeding bioassays. However, it is important to determine the extent to which results may be influenced by the physiological status (e.g., due to parasitism) of the animals used in the bioassay.

The influence of fresh water pollutants and interaction with Asellus aquaticus (L.) on the feeding activity of Gammarus pulex (L.).
The feeding response of juvenile amphipod Gammarus pulex (L.) was investigated following exposure to freshwater pollutants. The method employed is nondestructive, provides a rapid indication of the status of groups of individuals, and is based on a time-response analysis of the consumption of the eggs of Artemia salina and the determination of median feeding times or FT50s. The feeding activity...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Gammarus pulex in situ feeding assay as a biomonitor of water quality: robustness, responsiveness, and relevance.
Biomonitoring using benthic macroinvertebrates has been used to assess water quality in Europe since the early 20th century. Most methods use community-level measurements, and the use of single-species responses has been limited, despite their potential benefits as sensitive, early warning indicators. Here we evaluate a single-species in situ assay in which the response is feeding inhibition of...
متن کاملParasitism may enhance rather than reduce the predatory impact of an invader.
Invasive species can have profound impacts on communities and it is increasingly recognized that such effects may be mediated by parasitism. The 'enemy release' hypothesis posits that invaders may be successful and have high impacts owing to escape from parasitism. Alternatively, we hypothesize that parasites may increase host feeding rates and hence parasitized invaders may have increased comm...
متن کاملThe Insecticide Imidacloprid Causes Mortality of the Freshwater Amphipod Gammarus pulex by Interfering with Feeding Behavior
If an organism does not feed, it dies of starvation. Even though some insecticides which are used to control pests in agriculture can interfere with feeding behavior of insects and other invertebrates, the link from chemical exposure via affected feeding activity to impaired life history traits, such as survival, has not received much attention in ecotoxicology. One of these insecticides is the...
متن کاملPredicting invasive species impacts: a community module functional response approach reveals context dependencies
Predatory functional responses play integral roles in predator-prey dynamics, and their assessment promises greater understanding and prediction of the predatory impacts of invasive species. Other interspecific interactions, however, such as parasitism and higher-order predation, have the potential to modify predator-prey interactions and thus the predictive capability of the comparative functi...
